What Does a Ratio Mean?
A common method for expressing dilution rates is through ratios, but sometimes knowing the ratio isn't enough information. For example, does a ratio of 1:8 mean use one part concentrate with seven parts water to make eight parts of solution? Or does it mean mix one part concentrate with eight parts water to make nine parts solution? This error comes to a 12.5% difference. Do you want your solution’s effectiveness to go down 12.5% or your costs to rise 12.5%? Most likely neither!

Check product labels for a detailed explanation of any ratio. If the details are not on the label, check directly with the manufacturer. It's worth the extra effort to make sure you're preparing the product for use at maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
